Republicans Win Control of House

Republicans will maintain their majority in the House of Representatives, securing total GOP control in Washington as President-elect Trump prepares to take office in January.

Decision Desk HQ announced Monday that the GOP clinched its 218th seat, the minimum required for a House majority.

This victory is a significant milestone for House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.), who quickly rose to prominence within the GOP. Johnson has not only been a legislative leader but also played a pivotal role in the party’s campaign efforts.

The GOP managed to protect several vulnerable incumbents, including Reps. Don Bacon (R-Neb.) and David Valadao (R-Calif.), while flipping key Democratic seats. Pennsylvania State Rep. Ryan Mackenzie defeated Rep. Susan Wild (D-Pa.), and businessman Rob Bresnahan ousted Rep. Matt Cartwright (D-Pa.).

Despite these wins, Republicans faced losses. First-term New York Reps. Anthony D’Esposito, Marc Molinaro, and Brandon Williams were defeated, along with Rep. Lori Chavez-DeRemer (R-Ore.).

With several California races still undecided, Republicans are on track to enter the new Congress with a narrow majority. The size of this majority will significantly impact Johnson’s ability to navigate legislative challenges and manage party unity.

During his victory speech from Palm Beach, Fla., Trump praised Johnson: “It also looks like we’ll be keeping control of the House of Representatives. And I want to thank Mike Johnson. I think he’s doing a terrific job.”

Trump’s celebration at Mar-a-Lago included top GOP leaders, such as House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.) and House GOP Chair Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.), underscoring their unified commitment to advancing his administration’s agenda.

Republicans have been working closely with Senate leaders to craft a legislative package for Trump’s first 100 days, including extending tax cuts, increasing border wall funding, repealing climate policies, and expanding school choice.

Johnson has expressed confidence in his leadership, stating his intent to retain the Speaker’s gavel when Congress reconvenes on Jan. 3, 2025. However, he must overcome resistance from some conservative factions, including Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) and Thomas Massie (R-Ky.), who previously attempted to unseat him.

National Republican Congressional Committee Chair Richard Hudson (R-N.C.) credited strategic investments in ground game operations and ad spending for the GOP’s success.

The outcome will influence legislative priorities in the lame-duck session, with conservatives likely pushing to delay key proposals until the new Congress convenes under full Republican control.
