During first son Hunter Biden’s initial court appearance on Wednesday morning, it became apparent that his plea deal was on shaky ground due to uncertainties surrounding federal prosecutors’ intentions for the ongoing investigation.
Fox News reported, “The president’s son was expected to plead guilty to two misdemeanor tax counts of willful failure to pay federal income tax, as part of plea deal to avoid jail time on a felony gun charge.
“But Judge Maryellen Noreika pressed federal prosecutors on the investigation and questioned whether there was the possibility for future charges,” the report added.
It was expected as well that Hunter would also be entering into a pretrial diversion agreement concerning a distinct felony charge related to the possession of a firearm by an individual who is either an unlawful user of controlled substances or addicted to them.
“His plea deal, which has faced ire from Republicans and opponents of the president, was likely to keep Hunter Biden out of jail,” Fox News noted further.
CNN added: “The Hunter Biden plea proceedings have restarted and the president’s son has agreed to a limited agreement that covers 2014 to 2019 and only includes conduct related to tax offenses, drug use and gun possession.”
“President Joe Biden’s son will still plead guilty to the tax misdemeanors for 2017 and 2018, but the agreement will also cover his tax-related conduct for the three years prior,” the network continued, noting further: “The two sides have agreed that this deal does not shield him from potential future charges.”
Earlier, CNN noted:
The judge called a second recess in the Hunter Biden plea proceedings as it appeared that the agreements the president’s son had reached with prosecutors had begun to unravel.
The judge said she had “concerns” about the parties seemingly linking the tax plea agreement to the deal on the gun charge. During the proceedings, prosecutors confirmed that the investigation into President Joe Biden’s son was ongoing.
Noreika, in the end, “said she was not ready to accept the plea deal, and the hearing ended with Hunter Biden pleading not guilty for the time being,” CNN noted further.
“The judge asked the sides to file additional briefs explaining the plea deal’s legal structuring,” the report concluded.
