Rep. Jasmine Crockett Calls Trump Supporters “Sick,” Says Nation Faces Mental Health Crisis

Rep. Jasmine Crockett, D-Texas, went after President Donald Trump and his supporters during an interview Thursday on Katie Couric’s “Next Question” podcast, claiming that Americans backing Trump are “sick” and pointing to a broader “mental health crisis” in the country.

Crockett made the comments while responding to a question about Trump’s use of National Guard and Marine forces to respond to anti-ICE protests in Los Angeles.

She accused the president of using those forces for personal “retribution.”

“It is sick, it is really sick and anybody that supports it is also sick,” Crockett said. “We’ve got a mental health crisis in this country because everyone, no matter how you affiliate yourself, should be against Trump. Period.”

The Texas Democrat maintained that her remarks were not partisan, saying she would welcome older, more traditional Republican leadership. “I would give anything to have — it’s sad to say — George Bush, like give me any regular Republican nowadays and I would be happy,” she said.

She added that Trump, in her view, “does not care,” and blamed his continued influence on Americans who “pump him up.”

Crockett also expressed concern for military members, saying many joined the armed forces to defend democracy only to now serve under a commander-in-chief she believes represents what they once fought against. “My heart breaks for service members,” she said. “It really breaks my heart and I don’t know how far he has to go before we can come together and just say enough is enough.”

Turning to congressional Republicans, Crockett claimed they have abandoned their constitutional responsibilities. “They [Republicans] won’t honor their oath, the oath that they swore to the Constitution,” she said, later calling them “cowards” for refusing to distance themselves from Trump.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt pushed back Thursday, saying Crockett’s comments reflected a misunderstanding of the president’s popularity. “The last time I checked, Jasmine Crockett couldn’t dream of winning such a majority of the public as President Trump did,” Leavitt said.
