Previously-Deported Illegal Immigrant Arrested After Teen Girl Stabbed At Baseball Game In Indiana

A previously deported illegal immigrant from Honduras was arrested on Sunday following an intensive manhunt in Indiana. Authorities had identified him as a person of interest in the random stabbing of a teenage girl at a baseball game.

The search for 26-year-old Dimas Gabriel Yanez began on Saturday after a 14-year-old girl was stabbed in the hand with a butcher-style knife while attending her brother’s baseball game in unincorporated Lowell, Indiana, according to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.

When the girl’s mother tried to intervene, Yanez allegedly attempted to stab her as well before fleeing the scene. The injured teen was treated at a hospital and later released. Authorities recovered a knife they believe was used in the attack and warned the public that Yanez should be considered armed and dangerous.

The search extended into Sunday when the sheriff’s office reported that Yanez had been sighted in the southern part of Lake County.

Yanez was captured later that afternoon when a sheriff’s department officer spotted him running through a cornfield, the sheriff’s office reported. Investigators suspect Yanez was trying to cut his hair to alter his appearance and avoid detection by law enforcement.

The sheriff’s office stated that Yanez had previously been deported to Honduras in 2018 and “may have been engaged in criminal activity across the United States since returning to the country illegally.”

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security was informed of Yanez’s arrest on Sunday, the sheriff’s office noted.

“I would like to extend my most heartfelt gratitude to each and every Lake County police officer and to all law enforcement agencies working tirelessly on the investigation and search in this case,” said Sheriff Oscar Martinez Jr. “I am proud of the level of cooperation exhibited by police officers throughout the county.”

Yanez is currently held at the Lake County Jail, but there has been no immediate information provided on whether he is facing any charges. The sheriff’s office stated that the investigation is still ongoing, and further details will be released as they become available.
