Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi appears to have admitted to playing some role in ‘convincing’ President Joe Biden to end his reelection bid during an interview this week after days of denying it.

The long-serving California Democrat, who has been a commanding figure in her party for decades, discussed the allegations that she was involved in Biden’s removal in an interview with The New Yorker.

There have been reports from sources close to the Biden family and top Democratic leaders about a coordinated effort. Pelosi, former President Barack Obama, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), and even House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries have been trying to persuade Biden to step aside. The push came following Biden’s poor debate performance in June.

According to a previous report from the New York Post, Pelosi, Obama, and others approved the use of the 25th Amendment, which says that a president would be compelled to resign if deemed mentally incapable by cabinet members, in the event that Biden refused to cooperate. Under the amendment, Biden’s powers would have been transferred to Vice President Kamala Harris to serve as acting president.

In a report published Thursday, Pelosi became the first one allegedly involved in the plot to speak about it. “I love him so much. I think he’s been a really a fantastic president of the United States. So I really wanted him to make a decision of a better campaign. Because they were not facing the fact of what was happening,” Pelosi told the New Yorker. “Just a little background. I’ve never been that impressed with his political operation.” When asked to clarify, she confirmed that she was talking about Biden’s political operation. “Yeah, I’m not. I mean, I just haven’t. They won the White House, bravo,” Pelosi responded.

“But so my concern was this ain’t happening and we have to make a decision for this to happen and the president has to make the decision for that to happen. Let me just say, I won’t say necessarily I knew what I was doing at that time. I knew what I was doing in the whole thing, not just that ship,” the former House speaker went on to say. “And what was that?” the interviewer followed up, to which Pelosi responded with, “That Donald Trump would never set foot in the White House again.”
