‘Obvious Decline’: Major Daily Newspaper Calls On Biden To Sit Out 2024

A major daily newspaper is calling out President Joe Biden and imploring him to sit out running for reelection over what its editorial board described as his “obvious decline” since taking office.

“The public understands what Mr. Biden apparently won’t admit: that electing an octogenarian in obvious decline for another four years could be an historic mistake,” The Wall Street Journal’s board wrote on Friday amid reports that Biden is planning to officially announce another run next week.

The WSJ board went on to write that “asking the country to elect a man who is 80 years old and whose second term would end when he is 86 is a risky act that borders on selfish.”

The editors alleged the administration “goes to great lengths” to shield and downplay what they believe is Biden’s declining mental health.

“But his decline is clear to anyone who isn’t willfully blind,” they argued.

The editors point to a dearth of press conferences and other circumstances which Biden avoids so as not to have to engage.

“Different people age at different rates, but the risk of an accelerated decline for Mr. Biden is considerable. The chance that he could serve a full second term is hardly assured,” they wrote.

The editors also slammed Vice President Kamala Harris as being unelectable and a poor choice to replace Biden in any case.

“In that event, voters on the fence could swing toward a Republican nominee who can at least meet the rigors of the office. Yes, even Donald Trump,” they argued.

According to the editors, defeating former President Trump in a general election is not solely reliant on Joe Biden, as there are other Democrats who could also do so. If Biden were to make an announcement soon stating that he will not run, this would provide sufficient time for younger Democratic governors to enter the race.

The editors’ argument is that the best reason for Biden not to run for office is patriotism. They suggest that his fitness to serve as a political leader is in question, referencing a 2008 campaign ad by Hillary Clinton that raised similar concerns.

“In 2008 Hillary Clinton ran an ad saying that she was prepared to take a 3 a.m. phone call in a crisis,” the board wrote. “Could an 84-year-old Joe Biden take a 3 p.m. call?”
