A New York Times/Siena College poll reveals Vice President Harris with the lowest polling numbers for a Democratic presidential nominee in decades, just hours before former President Donald Trump’s scheduled rally at Madison Square Garden. Trump is expected to highlight his efforts to capture the state’s 28 electoral college votes.
Released on Saturday morning, the poll indicates Harris leading Trump among registered voters 66% to 27%—a significant dip from President Biden’s 76% to 23% margin over Trump in New York City during the 2020 election. This polling figure, if sustained, would mark the weakest showing for a Democratic presidential candidate in the city since 1988, according to The New York Times.
Key concerns among respondents are the economy, followed by immigration and abortion. New York City has experienced multiple crises in recent years, continuing to recover from the impacts of the COVID-19 lockdowns.
The city ranks highest in median monthly rent for one-bedrooms among 100 cities, per rental marketplace platform Zumper, while housing tens of thousands of illegal immigrants. Costs related to the crisis are projected to exceed $5 billion, with Mayor Eric Adams estimating that expenditures could rise above $10 billion by next fiscal year’s end.
New York City Mayor Adams’ administration is also dealing with his recent indictment on bribery and corruption charges, while Governor Kathy Hochul struggled in her 2022 reelection, winning by just six points.
In the midterms, Democratic candidates for the House won the state’s popular vote by only nine points, a notable drop from Biden’s approximately 23-point margin in 2020. Trump has made notable gains nationally among Black, Hispanic, and younger voters, which he aims to leverage during Sunday’s rally in New York.
Polls conducted between October 20 and October 23 reached 853 New York City voters, with a 3.9% margin of error. A national New York Times/Siena College poll shows Trump and Harris tied at 48% each.
