A local Democratic Party chair in North Carolina stepped down this week following his arrest for allegedly tearing out and stealing roadside signs supporting former President Donald Trump.
Lowell Simon, the now-former chair of the Moore County Democratic Party, was charged with two counts of misdemeanor larceny related to the theft of political signs. Simon, who is also running for a seat in the North Carolina House of Representatives in November, was observed by law enforcement removing the signs.
The Moore County Democratic Party posted on Facebook Monday that 68-year-old Simon had resigned from his position as chair “following recent allegations and arrest related to the theft of political signs.”
According to the Moore County Sheriff’s Office, a deputy on duty in the West End area noticed Simon removing campaign signs along Seven Lakes Drive at about 5:25 p.m. last Thursday. The deputy, responding to an unrelated call, later went to Simon’s residence, where the signs were discovered in his vehicle. Simon confessed to removing them, and the signs were returned to their rightful owner.
A warrant for Simon’s arrest was issued on Saturday. He was released under a written promise to appear in court, and his first court date is scheduled for October 30.
In a statement, the Moore County Democratic Party expressed appreciation for Simon’s work but emphasized that they “cannot and will not condone the tampering of political signs or any other illegal activity.” The party accepted Simon’s resignation and apology for his actions.
In a phone interview with WRAL following his arrest, Simon expressed frustration over signs supporting Democratic gubernatorial candidate Josh Stein, which he had placed, being blocked by newer signs reading: “Trump low taxes, Kamala high taxes.”
“My worse angels got the better of me and I removed the signs,” Simon admitted. “I shouldn’t have done that. I didn’t do it under cover of night or anything. I did it in broad daylight at five o’clock in the afternoon.”
The Moore County Democratic Party reaffirmed its commitment to free speech, writing, “We believe in the importance of freedom of expression and speech, and hope that local law enforcement will continue to enforce such laws that protect those freedoms fairly and without bias across party lines.” They also noted their continued focus on electing Democrats in the upcoming election, stressing their dedication to justice, fairness, and freedom.
Last week, Moore County Sheriff Ronnie Fields, a Republican, issued a reminder to the public, citing North Carolina General Statute § 136-32(e), which makes it illegal to remove or steal campaign signs during election periods.
