Elon Musk is promoting the success of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), pointing to a new poll that shows strong public support for the Trump administration’s initiative to cut wasteful government spending.
A Harvard CAPS-Harris poll found that a majority of Americans support reducing government waste and believe a dedicated agency like DOGE is making a difference. “Polls show that @DOGE is overwhelmingly POPULAR and that government spending should be reduced by at least $1 trillion!!” Musk wrote on X.
The White House and Musk have both highlighted the poll results on social media, calling it proof that “reducing government waste & fraud is strongly supported by the people,” as Musk posted. President Donald Trump shared the poll on Truth Social, and Musk posted a screenshot of Trump’s message on his X account.
The poll found that most voters believe the national debt is unsustainable and that cutting wasteful spending is necessary. A large majority agreed that “government expenditures are filled with waste and agree with cutting $1 trillion in expenses.” The survey also found that most respondents think DOGE employees should not have access to sensitive personal data and that legal challenges to DOGE are based on the law, not political motivations, Fox reports.
Support for DOGE falls largely along party lines. A Washington Post-Ipsos poll found that 70% of Republicans approve of Musk’s leadership, compared to just 6% of Democrats. A Quinnipiac University poll found that 55% of voters believe Musk has too much power, with 78% of Republicans disagreeing and 96% of Democrats agreeing. An AP-NORC poll also showed that Republicans are more likely to favor DOGE than Democrats, though the majority of Americans believe “corruption, inefficiency, and red tape are major problems in the federal government.”
Musk’s latest DOGE initiative requires federal employees to report their accomplishments weekly or risk losing their jobs. “Consistent with President @realDonaldTrump’s instructions, all federal employees will shortly receive an email requesting to understand what they got done last week. Failure to respond will be taken as a resignation,” Musk announced. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy publicly complied, listing his weekly achievements.
Trump praised Musk’s efforts, saying DOGE is “doing a great job” and should “get more aggressive.” While Republicans back Musk’s push for government efficiency, Democrats continue to protest DOGE’s layoffs and department cuts, calling Trump’s actions a “constitutional crisis.”
