In the wake of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s resignation as leader of the Liberal Party on Monday, reactions from key public figures flooded social media.
Amid ongoing criticism from U.S. President-elect Donald Trump, the Republican leader doubled down on his push for Canada to become the 51st U.S. state.
“Many people in Canada LOVE being the 51st State. The United States can no longer suffer the massive Trade Deficits and Subsidies that Canada needs to stay afloat. Justin Trudeau knew this, and resigned,” Trump posted on Truth Social.
Trump continued, “If Canada merged with the U.S., there would be no Tariffs, taxes would go way down, and they would be TOTALLY SECURE from the threat of the Russian and Chinese Ships that are constantly surrounding them. Together, what a great Nation it would be!!!”
Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and owner of X, also weighed in on Trudeau’s announcement. Replying to a user who mentioned Trump’s victory and Trudeau’s resignation, Musk simply stated, “2025 is looking good.”
In his resignation speech, Trudeau announced he would remain as prime minister until a new leader is chosen.
“Last night over dinner, I told my kids about the decision I’m sharing with you today,” Trudeau stated. “This country deserves a real choice in the next election, and it has become clear to me that if I’m having to fight internal battles, I cannot be the best option in that election.”
