Michael Cohen, once former President Donald Trump’s personal attorney, admitted on the stand Monday as the ‘hush money’ trial continued that he stole from the Trump Organization, multiple reports noted.
Cohen testified on Monday that in 2017, he misled Allen Weisselberg, the former Chief Financial Officer of the Trump Organization, about the amount needed for reimbursement for a payment to the tech company RedFinch. Although he requested $50,000, Cohen testified that he actually paid the company only $20,000.
“You stole from the Trump Organization, correct?” Trump’s defense attorney Todd Blanche asked, according to ABC News.
“Yes, sir,” Cohen replied.
Cohen sought reimbursement for the payment to the tech company at the same time as the $130,000 payment he made before the 2016 election for a nondisclosure agreement with Stormy Daniels. This payment is central to Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s case against Trump.
Trump faces 34 counts of allegedly falsifying business records to reimburse Cohen for the Daniels payment through monthly installments of $35,000, which were described as payments for “legal services.”
Cohen is the sole witness who has testified to Trump’s direct involvement in the payments. Last week, he testified that Trump approved the plan for his reimbursement, affirming that Weisselberg discussed this in front of Trump, stating that Cohen would receive a total of $420,000 over 12 months.
During his testimony on Thursday, defense attorneys challenged Cohen’s credibility, presenting text messages that contradicted his claims about a key phone call. Cohen had stated that his call to Trump’s bodyguard, Keith Schiller, on October 24, 2016, was to discuss the Stormy Daniels matter with Trump. However, Trump’s defense attorney, Todd Blanche, argued that the messages showed Cohen actually spoke to Schiller about handling harassing calls he was receiving from a 14-year-old.
Elsewhere in the case, Trump’s attorneys have appealed the decision to impose a gag order on their client. The team filed an appeal with the New York Court of Appeals on Wednesday to have the gag order issued by Judge Juan Merchan eliminated, Newsweek reported.
“President Trump has filed a notice to appeal the unconstitutional and un-American gag order imposed by conflicted Judge Juan Merchan in the lawless Manhattan DA case,” Steven Cheung, a Trump presidential campaign spokesperson, said.
“The threat to throw the 45th President of the United States and the leading candidate in the 2024 presidential election in jail for exercising his First Amendment rights is a Third World authoritarian tactic typical of crooked Joe Biden and his comrades,” he said.
