A Los Angeles man was allegedly kidnapped at gunpoint while visiting Mexico, with his suspected captors sending his family graphic videos and a threatening photo.
Court documents reviewed by Fox News Digital revealed that the victim was blindfolded and tied up in a rectangular concrete trench with weapons pointed at his head.
The suspects, a Mexican family, reportedly pistol-whipped the victim and fired a shot near his head. This violent encounter was recorded and sent to his family in Los Angeles along with ransom demands of $70,000, federal prosecutors stated, Fox News reports.
The victim, identified as “R.V.” in court filings, was in Playas de Rosarito, Baja California, a popular surfing destination, when he was allegedly abducted in 2022. Prosecutors disclosed the details of the scheme after three suspects were arrested this spring.

The suspects were identified as Mario Alex Medina (aka “Shyboy”), his son, Jose Salud Medina (aka “Gordo”), and Mario’s sister, Maria Alejandra Medina.
On November 5, 2022, R.V., who has family in Los Angeles but holds Mexican citizenship, was kidnapped by the three members of the Medina family, according to federal prosecutors.
Over the next two days, R.V.’s family received distressing photos and videos, including one showing R.V. blindfolded and tied up in a concrete trench with guns pointed at his head.
On November 7, 2022, the family received a video showing the kidnappers beating R.V. with their fists, feet, and a hammer, as stated in the criminal complaint.
Initially, the ransom demand was $70,000. By November 10, 2022, Jose Medina, 31, allegedly threatened to kill R.V. if the family didn’t immediately pay $30,000.
That same day, the alleged kidnappers crossed the border to collect the ransom in San Ysidro, California, near Tijuana. They met at a McDonald’s, where R.V.’s family paid $30,000.
Maria Medina, 50, assured the family of R.V.’s safety before retreating back into Mexico, according to the federal complaint.
Mexican law enforcement found the victim “tied up and alone in a small subterranean trench” on November 11, 2022, as per court documents.
The suspects evaded capture for about two years until their arrests in March and April. They were each indicted by a federal grand jury on April 9 on charges of making foreign communication with intent to extort, which carries a maximum life sentence.
