NBC “Meet The Press” anchor Kristen Welker hammered President-elect Donald Trump on whether he would go after his political enemies the way the administration of President Joe Biden went after him, though she never mentioned that.
She peppered the president-elect with questions about his picks to head the Department of Justice and the FBI, Pam Bondi and Kash Patel respectively, and on members of the January 6 House Committee.
“He has a list in his book of 60 people that he calls members of the so-called deep state. It includes Democrats like Joe Biden and Hillary Clinton, it includes former members of your cabinet from Bill Barr to Christopher Wray,” the anchor said of the proposed FBI director. “You campaigned on destroying the deep state. Do you want Kash Patel to launch investigations into people on that list?”
“No. I mean, he’s going to do what he thinks is right,” Trump responded before agreeing that he would have “an obligation” to look into “dishonest or crooked” politicians.
Welker then asked if he would direct Patel or Bondi to look into certain politicians who he has had issues with.
“We have two great people, we have him and we have Pam,” said Trump. “Pam Bondi has been like a rocket ship, she’s very popular and very good and very fair and Kash Patel is very fair. I’ll tell you, I thought Kash may be difficult, because he’s, you know, a strong conservative voice and I don’t know of anybody that’s not singing his praises.”
But Welker was not done as she then asked him if he would ask Patel to “go after Biden.”
“I’m looking to make our country successful. Retribution will be through success,” said the president-elect.
“Pam Bondi talks about investigating the investigators. Do you want to see Jack Smith investigated?” the anchor asked, to which the president-elect responded, “I want her to do whatever she has to do.”
“Are you going to direct her to investigate Jack Smith?” she said again before he said, “No, I’m not.”
She went on to question if he would go after former Republican Rep. Liz Cheney because he said she “should go to jail?”
“Are you going to direct your FBI director attorney general to send them to jail?” she said.
“Not at all,” the president-elect said.
“I think they’ll have to look at that, but I’m not going to — I’m going to focus on drill, baby, drill,” he said.
