A caravan of 2,000 illegal immigrants is making its way through Mexico, aiming to reach the U.S. southern border before the November 5 presidential election. Many fear the possibility of border restrictions tightening if former President Donald Trump returns to the White House, as reported by the New York Post on Sunday.
The caravan departed from Tapachula, a town on the Guatemalan border, beginning a nearly 2,000-mile journey toward the U.S. The group is made up of people from various Central American countries, who fear that even if Trump does not win, Vice President Kamala Harris might move to restrict asylum entry and illegal immigration, reports the Gulf Insider.
“That is what makes us fearful. They say this could change because they could both close the CBP One appointment and all the services that are helping migrants,” said Joel Zambrano, an illegal immigrant from Venezuela, referencing U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s (CBP) online system. The app allows individuals to apply for asylum and legally enter the country. In the past two years, in addition to millions of illegal immigrants entering the U.S., 1.3 million people have utilized the CBP One app.
During his rallies, Trump has vowed to close the border to illegal immigrants, deport those already in the country, and even invoke the death penalty for illegal immigrants who kill Americans or law enforcement officers. On the other hand, Vice President Harris, who recently visited the Arizona-Mexico border, has indicated that she would take a stronger stance on border security than President Biden. However, she has also backed a bill that could allow 1.4 million illegal immigrants into the U.S. each year.
“I will do more to secure our border, to reduce illegal border crossings,” Harris said during her visit to the border as the Democratic presidential nominee. “I will take further action to keep the border closed between ports of entry,” she stated, according to the New York Post. Despite these statements, the deportation of illegal immigrants has dropped by 74% under the Biden-Harris administration.
Federal records from the Department of Health and Human Services show that reports of sex trafficking involving illegal immigrant children have tripled during the current administration. CBP has raised concerns that many children crossing the border are being exploited.
In recent weeks, additional caravans of 600 and 800 illegal immigrants have also started their journey toward the U.S. “The situation in my country is very bad, the president doesn’t do anything for us,” said Roberto Domínguez, a 48-year-old from Honduras, who is preparing to leave Tapachula.
