The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD) deleted a social media post on Sunday and subsequently apologized for it after referring to the United States’ bombing of key Iranian nuclear facilities as a “tragic event.”
LASD released a statement saying, “Our hearts go out to the victims and families impacted by the recent bombings in Iran.”
Despite hitting at least three of Iran’s most important nuclear sites, the Trump administration has not indicated there were civilian casualties.
In its now-deleted social media post, the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department added, “While this tragic event occurred overseas, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is closely monitoring the situation alongside our local, state, and federal partners.”
Later on Sunday, the country’s largest sheriff’s department issued a statement “to formally apologize” for what it called “an offensive and inappropriate social media post.”
“This post was unacceptable, made in error, and does not reflect the views of Sheriff Robert G. Luna or the Department,” the statement continued. “As a law enforcement agency, we do not comment on foreign policy or military matters.”
The sheriff’s department added that it has launched an investigation to “determine how [the post] was created and published.”
