Vice President Kamala Harris officially secured her party’s 2024 presidential nomination on Friday, as announced by the Democratic National Committee (DNC), which confirmed that she had obtained the majority of pledged delegates for the upcoming national convention.
“I am so proud to confirm that Vice President Harris has earned more than a majority of votes from all convention delegates and will be the nominee of the Democratic Party following the close of voting on Monday,” stated DNC chair Jaime Harrison.
On a call with supporters on Friday, Harris expressed, “I am honored to be the presumptive Democratic nominee for President of the United States.”

She emphasized that “the tireless work of our delegates, our state leaders and staff has been pivotal in making this moment possible.”
This announcement came amid a virtual roll call for the nomination, initiated by the DNC on Thursday and concluding on Monday.
Though Harris’ nomination was never in doubt, she was the sole candidate to qualify for the presidential nomination roll call. This marks a historic milestone as Harris becomes the first woman of color to lead a major political party’s national ticket.
While the official nomination vote by the delegates is being conducted remotely, the DNC announced a ceremonial roll call at the Democratic National Convention set to begin on Aug. 19 in Chicago.
Harris’ nomination was finalized less than two weeks after President Biden’s unexpected announcement that he was ending his 2024 re-election campaign against former President Trump, the GOP nominee.
Biden’s surprising decision followed increasing pressure from within the Democratic Party for him to withdraw after a poor performance in the first presidential debate with Trump last month. The 81-year-old Biden’s halting and stumbling delivery raised questions about his capability to serve another term.
Biden’s immediate support for Harris triggered a wave of endorsements from Democratic governors, senators, House members, and other party leaders. Within 36 hours, Harris announced that she had secured the verbal backing of a majority of the nearly 4,000 convention delegates.
With Harris’ nomination now certain, speculation has intensified over her choice for running mate. The Harris campaign announced that she and her soon-to-be-named running mate will begin a tour through all seven key battleground states starting Tuesday in Pennsylvania.
Following the conclusion of the virtual roll call for the presidential nomination at 6 p.m. ET on Monday, DNC rules permit Harris to nominate her running mate.
The DNC stated that the convention chair would then declare that candidate as the party’s vice presidential nominee.
