Israel Says US Strikes Severely Damaged Iran’s Nuclear Program, Set Effort Back ‘Many Years’

The Israeli government has concluded that recent U.S. military strikes on Iran have caused long-term damage to the country’s nuclear program, significantly delaying its ability to produce nuclear weapons.

According to an official assessment released by the Israel Atomic Energy Commission, the U.S. bombing campaign destroyed key parts of Iran’s underground Fordow nuclear facility, rendering it unusable, reports Fox News.

“The devastating U.S. strike on Fordow destroyed the site’s critical infrastructure and rendered the enrichment facility inoperable,” the statement read. “We assess that the American strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities, combined with Israeli strikes on other elements of Iran’s military nuclear program, have set back Iran’s ability to develop nuclear weapons by many years.”

The agency also indicated that the impact could be sustained if Iran is unable to acquire new nuclear materials. “The achievement can continue indefinitely if Iran does not get access to nuclear material,” the statement continued.

Confirmation of the damage appeared to come from Tehran. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei acknowledged the extent of the strikes, reportedly telling the Associated Press that “nuclear installations have been badly damaged, that’s for sure.”

The strikes occurred in the early hours of June 22, when the United States targeted Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan using B-2 stealth bombers equipped with 30,000-pound bunker-busting ordnance. Fordow, located deep underground, has served as one of Iran’s primary uranium enrichment sites.

Israeli forces followed up with additional attacks on infrastructure surrounding Fordow, including roads and transport routes leading to the facility.

On Monday, Israel also carried out airstrikes on Iranian command centers and Evin Prison, a notorious facility associated with political detentions. The Israeli Defense Forces said the latest round of military action is part of “an ongoing effort to degrade the Iranian regime’s military capabilities.”

Iran’s nuclear chief Mohammad Eslami said Tuesday that officials are reviewing the damage and working to restore operations at the affected sites.

“Our plan is to prevent interruptions in the process of production and services,” he said.
