A recent post-debate poll indicates that Americans identifying as independents favor Donald Trump over Kamala Harris on critical issues like immigration and the economy. In addition, 41 percent of independents in the poll stated that ABC News was unfair to the GOP nominee, while only two percent said the same about Harris.
The poll, conducted by YouGov, revealed that 46 percent of independents believe both Trump and Harris were treated fairly during the debate. Among all respondents, 35 percent of Americans felt Trump was treated unfairly, while only six percent said the same for Harris. Half of those surveyed thought both candidates were treated fairly, with just one percent saying that both were treated unfairly.
The poll also highlighted opinions from key political groups, particularly independents, who are a critical voting bloc in the general election. Independents were more likely to perceive bias against Trump than Harris, with only two percent stating that both candidates were treated unfairly.
This sentiment comes amid criticism directed at debate moderators David Muir and Linsey Davis of ABC News, including from the co-chair of the Commission on Presidential Debates, for showing apparent bias against Trump in favor of Harris.
After the debate, independents leaned more toward Trump on several major issues. On immigration, 53 percent of independents said Trump would handle the issue “very well” or “somewhat well,” compared to 38 percent who said the same for Harris. Similarly, on the economy, 59 percent of independents believed Trump would manage the economy “very well” or “somewhat well,” while only 40 percent expressed the same level of confidence in Harris.
The survey was conducted among 1,407 U.S. adults between September 10 and 11, with a margin of error of 5.1 points.
