A 22-year-old Mexican national with a prior weapons conviction has been arrested near the U.S.-Mexico border, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) said Wednesday, Fox News reports.
The man, identified as Gibram Torres, was taken into custody in El Centro, California, a city located just a few miles from Mexicali, Mexico. ICE stated that Torres had previously been convicted of carrying a concealed weapon in a vehicle. He is now being held while deportation proceedings move forward.
In a post by ICE San Diego, the agency said “ICE San Diego officers arrested Mexican national Gibram Torres, 22, in El Centro, CA. Torres is convicted of carrying a conceal weapon in a vehicle. He remains in ICE custody pending immigration proceedings.”
ICE also released broader enforcement data this week, highlighting the agency’s activity during the early part of President Donald Trump’s second term. According to officials, ICE arrested 66,463 illegal immigrants and deported 65,682 during the president’s first 100 days back in office.
Of those arrests, 2,288 were identified as gang members linked to groups including Venezuela’s Tren de Aragua, MS-13, and the 18th Street gang, ICE reported.
“Additionally, 1,329 were accused or convicted of sex offenses, and 498 were accused or convicted of murder,” said ICE Acting Director Todd M. Lyons.
The agency added that criminal records among the arrested individuals also included 9,639 assault charges or convictions, 6,398 DWIs/DUIs, and 1,479 weapons-related offenses.
“This agency has set the bar on arrests and removals while upholding its national security mission,” said ICE Deputy Director Madison Sheahan.
