Illegal Immigrant Brazilian Fugitive Arrested In Massachusetts Sanctuary City

A Brazilian national living illegally in the United States, wanted in his home country for drug trafficking, was apprehended by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in the sanctuary city of Somerville, Massachusetts, near Boston.

The individual, whose name has not been disclosed, was taken into custody on Tuesday. Somerville, a city considering a resolution to reaffirm its sanctuary status, is set to vote next week on measures to provide taxpayer-funded legal services to illegal immigrants and maintain its police department’s commitment to non-cooperation with ICE detainers.

The Brazilian suspect entered the U.S. through El Paso, Texas, in 2022 and was released into the country despite facing drug trafficking charges in Brazil.

“This noncitizen is accused of serious crimes in Brazil,” said Patricia H. Hyde, acting Field Office Director for ERO Boston. “Public safety is ERO Boston’s primary mission, and our officers are committed to removing potentially dangerous noncitizens from our streets.”

The suspect received a deportation order in January, which was upheld after a failed appeal. A federal immigration judge issued a final removal order in June.

In a separate operation, ICE also arrested Belardis Tapia Gonzalez, a Dominican national who entered the U.S. illegally in July 2021. Gonzalez faces charges of child molestation and sexual assault in Rhode Island and was detained on Monday in Lynn, Massachusetts.

Additionally, ICE reported the case of a Salvadoran MS-13 gang member, who entered the U.S. as a “gotaway” and was convicted of assault in Massachusetts. Despite ICE placing a detainer on him with Northampton District Court, the individual was released into the community without federal authorities being notified, reprots Fox News.

Massachusetts Democrats, including Governor Maura Healey and Boston Mayor Michelle Wu, have faced mounting criticism for their opposition to President-elect Donald Trump’s pledge to implement mass deportations of illegal immigrants upon taking office in January.

Governor Healey has publicly stated that state police will “absolutely not” assist in the incoming administration’s deportation efforts, pledging to use “every tool in the toolbox” to “protect” the state’s residents.
