An illegal immigrant with a long history of criminal offenses was arrested for allegedly attempting to kidnap and rape a stranger on a popular Virginia trail, just days after being released from jail, according to police.
At a press conference Monday evening, the Herndon Police Department announced that 31-year-old Denis Humberto Naverrette Romero was charged with abduction with intent to defile and rape, Fox reports.
“Let me start by saying that I am incredibly saddened and outraged that a crime like this could happen here in the town of Herndon,” stated Herndon Police Chief Maggie DeBoard. “This is the only stranger rape that we have had in the town in my more than 12 years as chief of police.”
Romero, a Honduran national, has a record of sexual assaults and indecent exposures in the region dating back to 2022, DeBoard confirmed.
A source informed Fox News Digital that Romero, who is homeless, has been repeatedly jailed but has never served significant time. The source added that several of his charges were reduced to lesser offenses by prosecutors. Romero’s criminal history has escalated from weapons violations and auto theft to indecent exposure, sexual assault, and now abduction and attempted rape.
“This kind of case not only impacts the victim directly, but impacts our entire community, especially when it occurs in a very public area that we consider safe and that is used by all of our residents and visitors daily,” DeBoard said.
On Monday evening, just before 9 p.m., police responded to a call on the W&OD Trail after a woman approached a passerby, claiming she had been raped. The victim reported that Romero grabbed her, forced her to the ground, and attempted to rape her. She managed to fight him off and escape to get help.
Police quickly located Romero near the scene and uncovered his extensive criminal background. Investigators now suspect there may be additional victims and witnesses to Monday’s offense.
“What is disturbing is the number of times this individual has been arrested and released,” DeBoard remarked. “He has continued to re-offend, and his behavior has escalated to a rape in a very public area in our town.”
Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin also commented on the case, expressing outrage that Romero was allowed back onto the streets.
“I am heartsick for this victim and outraged that local Fairfax County officials recklessly release violent illegal immigrants who should have been prosecuted and deported. This is a dereliction of their most basic duty to keep people safe,” Youngkin wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
“Prioritizing violent illegal immigrants over the safety of Fairfax residents is unacceptable. Virginia is not a sanctuary state. When President Trump takes office, the political posturing will end, and localities will cooperate with ICE to protect Virginians.”
Romero is currently being held without bond at the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center.
Call for Information
Anyone with knowledge of Monday’s incident or who believes they may be a victim is encouraged to contact the Herndon Police Department at (703) 435-6846.
“I want our community to know that you should feel safe here in town knowing that this individual has been removed from our streets in a rapid manner and remains in custody. And we will do everything in our power to ensure that he does remain in custody,” DeBoard assured.
