On Wednesday, the House approved the Laken Riley Act with a 263-156 vote, advancing the legislation to President Donald Trump for his signature.
House Majority Leader Steve Scalise said, “Today, we’re going to send to President Trump’s desk his very first bill to sign into law,” according to The Hill.
The vote saw 217 Republicans and 46 Democrats in favor of the bill, while 156 Democrats opposed it. The Senate had previously passed the legislation in a 64-35 vote, necessitating a final House vote on the amended version. Earlier in January, the original version of the bill cleared the House with a 265-159 vote.
Named after Georgia nursing student Laken Riley, who was tragically killed by Venezuelan illegal immigrant Jose Ibarra, the Act mandates that the Department of Homeland Security detain illegal immigrants charged with theft-related crimes. Ibarra, convicted of the crime, was sentenced to life in prison in November.
Two key amendments were added before the final vote. Senator Joni Ernst introduced a provision requiring ICE to detain illegal immigrants charged with causing death or injury. Another amendment, from Senator John Cornyn, ensures mandatory detention for those who commit acts of violence against law enforcement, as reported by the New York Post.
The bill now awaits President Trump’s signature to become law.
