Senator Josh Hawley (R-MO) called on his Republican colleagues Wednesday to give President-elect Donald Trump’s Cabinet nominees “a fair chance” during confirmation hearings.
Trump has signaled a willingness to use recess appointments to bypass the standard confirmation process, as some of his nominees have faced skepticism even from within the GOP.
In a Fox News interview, however, Hawley urged the Senate to move forward with the traditional process, stating, “Every single one of these nominees needs to have a confirmation hearing as quickly as possible.” He also expressed his intention to support all of Trump’s picks.
“I would just say to my Senate colleagues, listen, let these guys testify,” he told Fox News host Jesse Watters during his Wednesday evening show. “Give them a shot. I know some of these Senate GOP folks are saying, ‘Oh I’ve got concerns.’ That’s what a hearing is for.”
Hawley continued: “Don’t go out and bash these people and I tell you: at least allow them to make their case. And listen, I think they’ve got momentum.”
One of the most contentious Cabinet picks—former Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) for the role of Attorney General—has sparked significant opposition from Democrats and even criticism from some members of President-elect Trump’s own party.
Republican senators met earlier in the day with Vice President-elect J.D. Vance (R-OH) and Matt Gaetz as part of the Trump transition team’s efforts to secure their backing for Gaetz’s nomination.
Hawley said his impression of the meeting is that it “went great, and it’s full steam ahead.” He dismissed the idea that some Republicans voted against Gaetz prior to speaking with him.
“I’ve read about my colleagues, some of them here in the Senate, who say, ‘We’ve got deep concerns.’ Of course, I’m reading all of the slander and garbage in the press,” Hawley explained.
Hawley compared the controversy surrounding Matt Gaetz, including media coverage of a House ethics investigation, to the intense scrutiny and opposition faced by Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh during his confirmation process.
“The answer to that is let the guy speak,” Hawley said, adding Gaetz “deserves to be able to address this himself. He deserves to be able to lay out his vision and the president’s vision for the DOJ.”
Hawley asserted that President-elect Trump should be able to appoint a Cabinet that “reflects his agenda.” He also remarked that he believes the media and “the establishment” resent the wide-ranging coalition Trump has built.
