Vice President Kamala Harris took a page out of then-Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton’s 2016 playbook and refused to address a crowd gathered at Howard University for an election watch party after it became clear she would lose to now-President-elect Donald Trump.
Harris’s office announced a lid just before 1 a.m. Wednesday morning, signaling that there would be no further news or activity for the day. She did not visit Howard University, where her watch party was taking place, as most election analysts projected Trump as a strong favorite to win the White House.
“You won’t hear from the vice president tonight, but you will hear from her tomorrow,” Harris Campaign co-chair Cedric Richmond told an increasingly dwindling crowd at Howard just before 1 a.m. He added that votes are still being counted.
The campaign circulated an internal email, which gained traction on Twitter, instructing its staff to go home and get some rest ahead of midnight. Around that time, reports began to surface that the crowd at the Harris watch party was starting to dwindle, the Daily Caller reported.
“Those of you who were around in 2020 know this well: It takes time for all the votes to be counted – and all the votes will be counted. That’s how our system works. What we do know is this race is not going to come into focus until the early morning hours,” campaign manager Jen O’Malley Dillon wrote. “This is what we’ve been built for, so let’s finish up what we have in front of us tonight, get some sleep, and get ready to close out strong tomorrow.”
Trump, meanwhile, stopped by his watch party at the Palm Beach conference center, according to reports.
