Republican members of the House have issued a warning to the Biden-Harris Department of Justice (DOJ) and Attorney General Merrick Garland, stating that they will be held accountable if the release of the DOJ Inspector General’s report on the agency’s response to the January 6 Capitol riot is delayed.
The letter, authored by Rep. Thomas Massie and signed by House Judiciary Committee Chair Jim Jordan, along with other GOP members, states, “During your testimony before our Committee on June 4, 2024, Chairman Massie asked you a series of questions about Inspector General Michael Horowitz’s forthcoming report on the Department of Justice’s (DOJ) and its components’ actions before, during, and in response to the events that occurred at the US Capitol on January 6, 2021.”
Other GOP signatories of the letter include Reps. Chip Roy (R-TX), Ben Cline (R-VA), Victoria Spartz (R-IN), Barry Moore (R-AL), Andy Biggs (R-AZ), Dan Bishop (R-NC), Matt Gaetz (R-FL), and Harriet Hageman (R-WY).
On September 25, Inspector General Michael Horowitz testified before the House Weaponization Committee. When questioned about the FBI’s involvement in the January 6 riot, he did not deny the presence of FBI agents in the crowd. He further testified that the report detailing how many FBI informants were present at the Capitol that day was still in “draft form and pending classification review with the DOJ.”
Horowitz said at the time, “I’m not in a position to say that, both because it is in draft form, and we have not gone through the classification review,” in response to Rep. Massie’s inquiry about the number of FBI informants at the scene.
In the letter, Massie and his colleagues assert, “We expect that neither you nor anyone at DOJ will prevent Inspector General Horowitz from releasing this report in his preferred manner and on his preferred timeline. As you stated on June 24, you cannot ‘stop [Inspector General Horowitz] from doing what the law requires.'”
The GOP lawmakers concluded the letter by warning Garland, “If you or any of your subordinates, associates, deputies, or agents within the Department act to delay or interfere with the release of this report, Congress will hold you accountable. Thank you for your prompt attention to this matter.”
