Several suspected members of the violent Venezuelan gang Tren De Aragua (TdA) were arrested in a New York City apartment building situated next to a daycare center, highlighting the gang’s ability to hide among the general population in the sanctuary city, a law enforcement source informed Fox News.
The New York Post first reported the Bronx raid, where seven alleged TdA members—wanted on multiple warrants after crossing the U.S.-Mexico border—were apprehended. Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) and the NYPD’s federal task force conducted the Dec. 5 operation at a five-story apartment building located next to the Doña Juana Day Care facility. A worker at the daycare confirmed that children were present during the raid, the New York Post reports.
A separate operation in Brooklyn brought the total arrests to 22 suspected gang members.
TdA has exploited the leniency at the southern border under the Biden-Harris administration, with its members infiltrating U.S. communities and engaging in violent crimes such as murders, police shootings, robberies, and smuggling firearms into shelters housing illegal immigrants.
One suspected member, Jarwin Valero-Calderon, was tracked to the Bronx apartment via his ankle monitor. He was arrested on Dec. 5 on a federal warrant. According to the Post, Valero-Calderon entered the U.S. at Eagle Pass, Texas, in August 2022, received a court date, and subsequently amassed a criminal record across multiple states. Though ordered deported in April, he remained at large until the recent raid.
Valero-Calderon’s crimes included multiple larceny charges in New York, New Jersey, and Florida, as well as fraud and resisting arrest. Other individuals arrested included Angel Gabriel Marquez Rodriguez, 19, who faced charges for shoplifting in Chicago and larceny in New York City.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams recently met with incoming Border Czar Tom Homan and pledged cooperation with the new Trump administration in addressing illegal immigrant-related criminal activity. The initiative has faced resistance from some Democrats.
City Council Member Joe Borelli of Staten Island welcomed the crackdown. “This is a gang that set up camp in our city, and it is beyond the pale that the Democratic Party is entrenched against having the NYPD cooperate with ICE to remove them,” Borelli told Fox News Digital. “They are actively recruiting members among the illegal immigrant community and, unfortunately, spend most of their time terrorizing those very same people.”
