Former White House Stenographer Slams Transcript Edits After Biden Calls Trump Supporters ‘Garbage’

A former White House stenographer told The Post on Friday that they cannot recall any instance where the presidential press office altered transcripts to soften potentially inflammatory or embarrassing remarks — as officials have been accused of doing following President Biden’s Tuesday night comment labeling former President Donald Trump’s supporters as “garbage.”

“I don’t recall this happening ever in my six years as Biden’s vice presidential stenographer,” said Mike McCormick. “Nor did it happen in the one year I served President Trump or the five years I served President [George W.] Bush. What goes in the transcript is what the White House stenographer hears and transcribes.”

On Thursday, the Associated Press reported that the stenographers’ office raised concerns about a “breach of protocol” and “spoliation of transcript integrity” after Biden, 81, stated during a campaign call with the Voto Latino group that “the only garbage I see floating out there is his [Trump’s] supporters.” The official transcript, however, appeared altered, placing an apostrophe on “supporter’s,” implying Biden was referring to comedian Tony Hinchcliffe, who made controversial remarks at a Trump rally in Madison Square Garden.

Typically, transcripts of presidential speeches are sent to reporters unaltered by the press office, with strikethroughs marking any misspoken words or notes for unintelligible speech.

The leaked complaint triggered speculation within the West Wing about the leaker’s identity and motives, with sources suspecting a political aide rather than a stenographer, known for professionalism and discretion.

When questioned aboard Air Force One en route to Philadelphia, Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre deflected. “I was asked this question, multiple versions of this question, on Wednesday,” she said, despite not having addressed the stenographer’s complaint. She added, “I don’t have anything else more to share,” before giving a lengthy statement lauding Biden as “a president for all Americans.” No follow-up questions were asked due to time constraints.

McCormick, now a public supporter of Trump, added, “I don’t ever recall the press office changing a transcript at the president’s request. In the Bush years, President Bush was occasionally surprised by how the transcripts reflected his words but never altered them. Those words are his, but the transcripts belong to the American people.”

The alleged edit came after Biden’s statement provided an unexpected soundbite for Republicans, energizing their base. Trump, 78, and other Republicans seized on the remarks as campaign fodder ahead of the Nov. 5 election.

“Just moments ago, Joe Biden stated that our supporters are garbage,” Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) said at a Trump rally in Allentown, Pa. “He’s talking about the Border Patrol, nurses, teachers. He’s talking about everyday Americans who love their country and want to dream big again. And I hope their campaign is about to apologize for what Joe Biden just said. We are not garbage. We are patriots who love America.”

An email from a stenography supervisor to the press office, reported by the AP, described the edit as “a breach of protocol and spoliation of transcript integrity between the Stenography and Press Offices.” The supervisor noted, “If there is a difference in interpretation, the Press Office may choose to withhold the transcript but cannot edit it independently. Our Stenography Office transcript — released to our distro, which includes the National Archives — is now different than the version edited and released to the public by Press Office staff.”
