A fifth inmate who escaped from the Orleans Parish Correctional Facility last week has been taken into custody, Louisiana State Police confirmed Tuesday.
Corey Boyd, 19, was captured in New Orleans after being briefly seen on Friday, just hours following the escape. Authorities say he will be transferred to a secure facility outside the region. “Boyd will ultimately be transported to a secure state facility outside of the area and booked for Simple Escape,” the agency said in a Facebook post.
Boyd had been held on multiple charges before the breakout, including second-degree murder, attempted second-degree murder, aggravated battery, and threatening a public official. He is accused of killing Brandon Fees during a car burglary in 2024, according to Fox News.
According to investigators, the escape occurred Friday night when 10 inmates crawled through a hidden hole behind a toilet. Surveillance footage shows them then climbing over a barbed wire fence and running across a highway into a nearby neighborhood, where they changed clothes and disappeared.
As of Tuesday, five inmates are still on the run. They include:
- Lenton J. Vanburen Jr., 26, charged with illegal carrying of weapons, possession of a firearm or weapon by a felon, obstruction of justice, and introducing contraband into prison.
- Jermaine Donald, 42, facing charges of second-degree murder, aggravated battery, possession of a firearm by a felon, and obstruction of justice.
- Antoine Massey, 32, wanted for domestic abuse involving strangulation, motor vehicle theft, and a parole violation.
- Derrick Groves, 27, charged with three counts of attempted second-degree murder, two counts of second-degree murder, and battery of a correctional officer.
- Leo O. Tate Sr., 31, charged with burglary of an inhabited dwelling, weapons violations, vehicle theft, and multiple drug offenses.
In a related development, Sterling Williams, a 33-year-old maintenance worker at the Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office, was arrested and faces 10 counts of principal to simple escape and malfeasance in office. According to the Louisiana Attorney General’s office, Williams told investigators that an inmate threatened to stab him if he did not cooperate with the plan.
The search continues for the remaining escapees as authorities work to determine how the mass jailbreak was carried out.
