Few World Leaders Show Up To Hear Joe Biden’s UN Speech

President Joe Biden’s status among leaders of major world powers appears to have waned to a point of embarrassment, not to mention what it says about the status of the U.S. under his leadership.

According to The Associated Press, almost no major world leaders bothered to attend Biden’s address to the United Nations on Tuesday.

“The 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly is taking place in New York City, where presidents and leaders of at least 145 countries will gather. Though Biden, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will be in attendance, prominent leaders of the U.N. Security Council, such as France, China, Russia and the U.K., are not attending the U.N. General Assembly,” The Daily Caller reported, citing the AP story.

India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi will also be absent from the event, having hosted the annual G-20 summit earlier in September, as reported by CBS News. Russian President Vladimir Putin and China’s President Xi Jinping participated in the U.N. General Assembly virtually during the COVID-19 pandemic, although their in-person attendance has historically been infrequent, the reports noted further.

Biden also appeared to struggle with his words during the speech at times, which is becoming more commonplace.

The AP reported separately that Secretary of State Antony Blinken met with Chinese Vice President Han Zheng before the General Assembly gathered. Han said both nations face “difficulties and challenges” and should demonstrate “more sincerity” so as to “meet each other halfway.”

“While [U.K. Prime Minister Rishi] Sunak and [French President Emmanuel] Macron have an excuse, I do think it is telling that they are absent,” Richard Gowan, U.N. Director for the International Crisis Group, told CBS.

Meanwhile, Britain’s King Charles III is scheduled to visit France during the UN meeting.

“That said, I think the General Assembly is a good opportunity for Biden and [U.S. Secretary of State Antony] Blinken to work on firming up U.S. ties with non-Western leaders while Xi and Putin are absent,” Gowan noted further.

“Even without Xi and Modi at the U.N., there are quite a few non-Western leaders who will speak forcefully on behalf of the developing world,” Gowan added.
