Two girls’ track and field athletes chose not to stand on the medal podium next to a transgender competitor during the high jump awards ceremony at the Oregon state championship on Saturday night.
Video obtained by Fox News Digital shows high school seniors Reese Eckard of Sherwood High School and Alexa Anderson of Tigard High School stepping down from their podium positions alongside the transgender athlete representing Ida B. Wells High School.
Eckard, who placed fourth, and Anderson, who took third, both finished ahead of the transgender athlete, who tied for fifth place. However, the two girls turned away from the podium as the remaining competitors received their medals from event officials.
The footage later shows an official approaching Eckard and Anderson, gesturing for them to step away. The two athletes are then seen walking off the podium and standing to the side.
The transgender athlete previously competed in the boys’ category during the 2023 and 2024 seasons, according to Fox News Digital.
Eckard and Anderson received widespread praise on social media for stepping down from the podium, with prominent conservative activist and former NCAA swimmer Riley Gaines among those publicly commending their actions.
“We didn’t refuse to stand on the podium out of hate. We did it because someone has to say this isn’t right. In order to protect the integrity and fairness of girls’ sports, we must stand up for what is right,” Anderson said in a statement to Fox News Digital.
