Federal Judge Set Trial Date In Trump Documents Case

The federal judge appointed by former President Donald Trump, who is now overseeing his classified documents case brought by special counsel Jack Smith has set a new court date that the prosecution won’t like.

U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon has set the official trial date for May 20, 2024, after the legal team representing the Republican presidential candidate requested a delay until after the 2024 election. Prosecutors, on the other hand, had urged for an earlier trial, proposing December as a potential timeframe.

Trump faces a total of 37 charges, including allegations of willful retention of national defense information, conspiracy to obstruct justice, and making false statements. He has entered a plea of not guilty.

If Cannon’s proposed compromise date remains unchanged, Trump’s trial will occur shortly after a separate trial in New York on numerous state charges of falsifying business records. This scheduling would also place Trump’s trial near the conclusion of the GOP presidential primary calendar, making it likely that the primary winner would be known but before the official nomination at the Republican National Convention.

In her ruling, Cannon noted that the initial Dec. 11 trial date proposed by the Department of Justice was “atypically accelerated and inconsistent with ensuring a fair trial,” as reported by The Associated Press. She went on to side with Trump’s attorneys, who argued there was a “voluminous” amount of evidence that had to be reviewed prior to the trial.

“The Court finds that the interests of justice served by this continuance outweigh the best interest of the public and Defendants in a speedy trial,” Cannon wrote.

During a recent interview with Fox News’ Bret Baier, Trump reaffirmed his decision to retain classified documents and expressed his determination to pursue the 2024 Republican nomination. In preview clips of the interview, Trump justified his position on not handing over the documents at his Mar-a-Lago estate and criticized the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) when questioned by Baier about specifics from the indictment.

“I had boxes. I want to go through the boxes and get my personal things out. I don’t want to hand that over to NARA yet. And I very was busy as you’ve sort of seen,” Trump said.

In the upcoming year, the former president is likely to be confronted with further trials. Recently, he revealed that he received a letter from Special Counsel Jack Smith indicating that he is the subject of a Jan. 6 grand jury investigation. Simultaneously, prosecutors in Georgia are gearing up to disclose charging decisions in a probe concerning alleged efforts by Trump and his associates to overturn the election in that state.

The announcements are expected to be made within the next few weeks.
