The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has revealed that the U.S. government currently has more than 4.6 million active credit card accounts, processing nearly 90 million transactions totaling around $40 billion in fiscal year 2024.
“The US government currently has ~4.6M active credit cards/accounts, which processed ~90M unique transactions for ~$40B of spend[ing] in FY24,” DOGE stated in a post on X on Tuesday.
A breakdown of agency spending showed that the Department of Defense accounted for the highest number of transactions, approximately 27.2 million, and held about 2.4 million accounts.
DOGE, led by Elon Musk under President Donald Trump’s administration, has faced growing scrutiny, with critics arguing that Musk has been given too much authority in efforts to reduce the size of the federal government. The department has also been the target of multiple lawsuits aimed at blocking its cost-cutting measures.
Despite opposition, Trump has continued to back DOGE’s initiatives. On Tuesday, he issued a memo directing federal agencies to be “radically transparent” about their spending.
“The American people have seen their tax dollars used to fund the passion projects of unelected bureaucrats rather than to advance the national interest,” the memo stated. “The American people have a right to see how the Federal Government has wasted their hard-earned wages.”
DOGE has committed to providing an update on its efforts to streamline federal credit card use within a week. “DOGE is working w/ the agencies to simplify the program and reduce admin costs – we will report back in 1 week,” the agency said on X.
