The federal government is actively working to hire up to 1,200 employees focused on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), with many of these positions set to be embedded in the permanent federal workforce before the Trump administration assumes office. According to a Daily Wire analysis, these jobs, advertised on USAJobs.gov, offer annual salaries as high as $310,000, potentially adding up to $160 million in yearly salary expenses.
In the 10 days following Donald Trump’s election, 33 DEI-related positions were posted, with hiring deadlines closing prior to his inauguration, reports the Daily Wire.
These roles are designed to be outside the reach of political appointees, locking in employees whose objectives align with DEI initiatives that the incoming administration has publicly opposed.
For example, on November 15, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced a position for a Deputy Assistant Secretary for Minority Health, with a salary reaching $221,900 annually. This individual will oversee programs ensuring they “reflect the principles of workforce diversity” and will act as a principal advisor on minority health issues. The position’s application period closed on November 29, and the Biden administration is now evaluating candidates.
The Federal Deposit Insurance Commission (FDIC) is offering $310,000 for two high-level positions, including a Director of the Office of Minority and Women Inclusion, who will lead the agency’s DEI Strategic Plan and advocate for related initiatives. Additionally, the FDIC’s Office of Equal Employment is filling a similar $310,000 role for a director responsible for implementing DEI and employee performance programs.
Other agencies filling DEI-focused positions include:
- The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC): A $251,258 “supplier diversity officer” role.
- The Department of Homeland Security (DHS): A Deputy Director for Equal Employment Opportunity and Diversity to influence policy creation and implementation.
- The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD): A high-level DEI policy developer with a salary exceeding $200,000.
- The National Institutes of Health (NIH): Seeking Scientific Diversity Officers and Mental Health Scientific Diversity Officers with salaries nearing $192,000.
- The Pentagon’s Defense Equal Opportunity Management Institute (DEOMI): Hiring a $113,800-per-year social media specialist to support its diversity initiatives.
Critics argue that these hires will impose DEI policies on the Trump administration without its consent, as these employees will advocate for initiatives the incoming leadership may not endorse. For instance, DEOMI’s work has included creating posters featuring quotes like “Diversity: ‘I want to celebrate the richness and diversity of our faith experience in this country.’ -Senator Barack Obama.”
