A progressive prosecutor who was in charge of enforcing the law in the Georgia county where young nursing student Laken Riley was found murdered by an illegal immigrant had the nerve to campaign for re-election, and he was soundly defeated.

Athens-Clarke and Oconee Counties District Attorney Deborah Gonzalez was obliterated in a landslide by her Republican opponent, Kalki Yalamanchili, by a whopping 75 percent of the vote, Fox News reported.

Gonzalez rose to power in a 2020 election backed by progressive donors who wanted reforms in the wake of the Black Lives Matter protests over the death of George Floyd and the defund the police movement.

When she was elected, she heralded the fact that she was “progressive.”

“I think part of it is because I’m outspoken, and I am unapologetically a Democrat, and I consider myself a progressive prosecutor,” she said about the criticism she had received. 

“There are many prosecutors who don’t like that word — progressive — but to me, what it means is that we need to look at this differently. … We need to always ask ourselves, ‘Is this in the interest of justice?’” she said.

She blamed her Republican opponent’s donors for her defeat on Tuesday.

“In this election, we faced significant financial disparities, with our opponent receiving substantial backing from large donors,” she said. “While we may not have had the same economic power, we worked diligently with the resources we had, focusing on serving the voices of our constituents who often go unheard. Our commitment to community engagement and advocacy remains unwavering.”

The Republican celebrated his victory after the results were official on Tuesday.

“I’m looking forward to giving this city the district attorney’s office it deserves, one that delivers justice for all and does the right thing the right way regardless of if anyone’s watching,” he said to a bipartisan crowd of around 100 people at his victory speech at Big Dog’s on the River, Flagpole reported.

Gonzalez was at a Democrat watch party but left before the newspaper arrived, said the outlet.
