A large-scale cyberattack targeted X on Monday, causing widespread outages and disrupting access to the platform. Elon Musk confirmed the attack in an interview with FOX Business host Larry Kudlow, stating that the assault appeared to originate from the Ukraine region.
“There was a cyber-attack on X today, which shut it down and may have been foreign sourced,” Kudlow said during the interview.
Musk responded, “We’re not sure exactly what happened, but there was a massive cyber-attack to try to bring down the X system with IP addresses originating in the Ukraine area.”
Kudlow then asked if Musk believed Ukraine was responsible and whether the site was back up.
“So that’s your suspicion? Is the website up yet?” Kudlow asked.
“It’s up,” Musk replied.
Users first reported issues accessing X early Monday morning, with the outage peaking at different times throughout the day. Data from Downdetector showed that reports of outages began around 6 a.m. Eastern, spiking to over 21,000 reports. By 10 a.m., another wave hit, with over 40,000 reports. A third spike occurred around 11 a.m., with over 35,000 users experiencing problems. While service appeared to recover by early afternoon, intermittent disruptions continued.
Musk addressed the situation on X, writing, “There was (still is) a massive cyberattack against X. We get attacked every day, but this was done with a lot of resources. Either a large, coordinated group and/or a country is involved. Tracing…”
According to Newsweek, the hacker group “Dark Storm” claimed responsibility for the attack. Cybersecurity researchers at Check Point Research (CPR) identified the group as a pro-Palestinian collective that has previously targeted the U.S., Ukraine, the UAE, and Israel.
At this time, no additional details about the attack have been released.
