The United States Secret Service has urged former President Donald Trump to discontinue holding outdoor rallies, citing serious security concerns in the aftermath of an assassination attempt, according to sources who spoke to the Washington Post on Tuesday.
Officials from the Secret Service have advised Trump to halt organizing rallies with large outdoor crowds following security lapses that occurred during the attempted assassination at his outdoor rally at Butler Farm Show in Butler, Pa., sources told the Washington Post. It appears that Trump’s campaign team is considering moving towards holding more rallies in indoor venues and has no plans for any upcoming outdoor events, according to sources within the Trump campaign.
“We’ve seen from the early days of his presidency even, and before that during his first campaign in 2016, how important crowd size is to him. It gives him a lot of joy and energy being with large crowds,” former Trump spokeswoman Sarah Matthews told the Post. “He feeds off their energy. It’s almost like a source of comfort for him.”
“Obviously, with an indoor venue, you have a capacity,” she told the Post. “It doesn’t pack the same punch. There’s something about being at one of those outdoor rallies.”
In early 2024, the Trump team’s request for additional resources to enhance security for large events was turned down by the USSS, as reported by the Post on Saturday. Furthermore, USSS Director Kimberly Cheatle announced her resignation on Tuesday, following her refusal to answer questions regarding the security lapses that occurred during Trump’s rally during a bipartisan House Oversight Committee hearing on Monday.
Thomas Crooks, the would-be assassin of President Trump, managed to open fire from an unsecured building, a distance of 400 feet from Trump’s podium, during the attempted assassination. The Secret Service and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) informed lawmakers that they had identified the shooter 50 minutes prior to the commencement of the shooting, sources said.
