A Cuban migrant was taken into custody after bringing a “white powdery substance” to an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility in Florida on Thursday. The incident led to the evacuation of the building and caused a security guard to become ill.
The event occurred at ICE’s Miami field office in Miramar at 7:15 a.m. while the migrant was being screened, an ICE spokesperson told Fox.
Hazmat teams responded to the scene in full protective gear, including splash suits and masks. Emergency responders were seen using spray guns to decontaminate each other, while sniffer dogs were also deployed to assess the situation.
“Authorities were immediately notified, which led to a hazardous material response by Miramar Fire Rescue and Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue,” ICE said in a statement. “The building was evacuated and individuals were quarantined until the powder was identified.”
A uniformed security guard who came into contact with the substance began feeling ill and was taken out of the building on a stretcher while holding his neck. It remains unclear whether direct contact with the powder or mere proximity caused the reaction.
Both the migrant and the guard were transported to a local hospital as a precaution. ICE later confirmed that both were treated and released.
The Cuban migrant was arrested, and criminal charges are pending in connection with the incident. This comes as ICE intensifies enforcement efforts under the Trump administration, which has prioritized the deportation of illegal immigrants with criminal records.
Two additional individuals were also hospitalized with non-life-threatening conditions, according to WSVN. One was treated for diabetes, while the other experienced anxiety and asthma symptoms.
A witness reported seeing an employee become dizzy and faint just before emergency personnel arrived.
Footage from the scene showed people who had planned to visit the facility waiting in a long line across the street.
“The all clear was given at 9:45 a.m. and ICE resumed regular operations,” ICE stated. “We are not identifying the alien or the substance at this time.”
ICE Homeland Security Investigations, along with the Drug Enforcement Administration and the FBI, are conducting a joint investigation into the incident, WSVN reported.
