CNN senior conservative commentator Scott Jennings was furious with the prosecution of Daniel Penny, a Marine veteran who protected a group of New York City subway passengers by subduing a homeless man who threatened to harm them.
In the process of subduing the man, Jordan Neely, Penny accidentally killed him and was arrested and prosecuted by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, the same man who prosecuted President-elect Donald Trump.
“Daniel Penny is a hero. I agree with virtually everything Carrie said, except for one quibble, and that is, you know, you said there were failures on all sides,” he said.
“There’s a lot of failures here. The only person who did not fail was Penny. Penny was a Good Samaritan. He stood up for his fellow citizens in a moment when a lot of people would have not been able to, would have not wanted to, just could not have summoned the courage or will to do so, and so thank God for the good Samaritans,” Jennings continued.
“I think the biggest failure here, honestly, Alvin Bragg is a disgrace. He ought to resign. This man was a hero. He had his name and his life dragged through the mud for absolutely no reason other than he thought it would please radical political constituencies that he has. It is an absolute disgrace what the prosecutors did to this man,” he said.
CNN anchor Audie Cornish then mocked him.
“You keep referring to Neely as the victim,” Jennings said. “I think Penny is the victim in this case and I think the people on the train are the victim.”
The anchor responded, “I have a tendency to call the people who die a victim. We have different ideas about that, but to my mind, someone lost a child, and I’m always going to feel for that person. That’s just how I’m built. It’s like a Christian thing.”
“Are you saying I’m not a Christian?” Jennings retorted.
“Not at all. I just want to make sure that you understand it’s a values-based comment,” Cornish replied.
Jennings responded, “Are you saying I don’t have any values?”
“He needs a clip for the internet,” Cornish mocked as he smiled at the camera.
