CNN Forced To Correct False Report On GOP’s Sen. Britt’s SOTU Rebuttal

CNN was compelled to issue a correction to its reporting this week, aimed at discrediting a portion of Republican Alabama Sen. Katie Britt’s State of the Union rebuttal in which she included the tragic story of an unnamed sex trafficking victim to highlight the impact of the ongoing border crisis, Fox News reported.

The victim of sex trafficking, later identified as Karla Jacinto, endured significant brutality from the ages of 12 to 16 at the hands of traffickers in Mexico, as detailed by Britt in her rebuttal.

CNN showcased Jacinto in front of its audience over the weekend, featuring her in an appearance on the network and in a subsequent story. In its coverage, CNN made several claims aiming to undermine Britt’s portrayal of the story. However, these claims contradicted past reporting on Jacinto, as well as her own statements.

In its article following the weekend interview with Jacinto, CNN inaccurately claimed that Britt stated she had a one-on-one meeting with Jacinto. However, in her rebuttal, Britt never asserted that she had such a meeting. She simply mentioned that she “spoke” with Jacinto while traveling to the border in Texas.

When asked for comment regarding the inaccuracy, CNN responded that it had amended the piece to clarify that it was Jacinto’s perspective rather than the outlet itself that Britt claimed the two had met one-on-one.

“CLARIFICATION: This story has been updated to clarify the circumstances of Britt’s meeting with Jacinto,” a note at the bottom of the story now says, according to Fox News.

CNN also depicted Britt as inaccurately asserting that Jacinto was trafficked by Mexican drug cartels. However, the senator never explicitly mentioned “drug cartels” during her rebuttal. She specifically referred to “cartels,” alluding to organized crime along the border, which aligns with how Jacinto previously described her traffickers as a “crime organization” during her testimony before the House Foreign Affairs Committee in May 2015.

During the hearing, Jacinto mentioned a “pimp, or the crime organization” that she said took her 1-year-old daughter from her so she could continue working for them. A Fox News report from later that year also outlined how Jacinto’s pimp, described as her boyfriend, was “part of an international organized crime ring” and coerced her into a life of prostitution and violence.
