Boston Mayor Michelle Wu has stated that her city will not cooperate with the incoming Trump administration’s plans to conduct mass deportations of illegal immigrants. This declaration aligns with Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey’s earlier announcement that the entire state would refuse to comply.
“Elections have consequences,” Wu told local news. “And the federal government is responsible for a certain set of actions, and no individual city can reverse or override some parts of that.”
Wu added, “But what we can do is make sure that we are doing our part to protect our residents in every possible way, that we are not cooperating with those efforts that actually threaten the safety of everyone by causing widespread fear and having large-scale economic impact.”
Governor Healey echoed these sentiments shortly after Trump was declared president-elect, asserting that Massachusetts would “absolutely not” comply with any requests from the Trump administration for state police to assist in mass deportations.
Other major cities and states, including Los Angeles, New York City, and Illinois, have also pledged not to support the federal government’s deportation efforts.
Incoming border czar Tom Homan urged illegal immigrants to “self-deport,” stating that while the administration’s initial focus would be on deporting criminals and individuals who pose national security risks, other illegal immigrants should take the opportunity to “get their affairs in order” and leave voluntarily.
