During a recent campaign stop in Georgia for Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris, former President Bill Clinton was heard saying that Georgia nursing student Laken Riley might still be alive if the Biden-Harris administration had not allowed so many illegal immigrants into the country without “proper vetting.”
“You had a case in Georgia not very long ago, didn’t you? They made an ad about it, a young woman who had been killed by an immigrant. Yeah, well, if they’d all been properly vetted, that probably wouldn’t have happened. But if they are properly vetted and that doesn’t happen— And America isn’t having enough babies to keep our populations up, so we need immigrants that have been vetted to do work—there wouldn’t be a problem,” Clinton said.
Jose Ibarra, an illegal immigrant from Venezuela, has been indicted for the murder of Riley in February 2024. Ibarra illegally crossed into the U.S. in September 2022 and was reportedly released into the country. During a U.S. Senate hearing in April, Senator Josh Hawley pressed Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas for answers, questioning why Ibarra was allowed to remain in the U.S. Hawley pointed out that Ibarra was initially encountered by U.S. Border Patrol in El Paso and was “paroled into the United States due to lack of detention capacity.”
The indictment against Ibarra accuses him of causing Riley’s death through blunt force trauma to the head and asphyxiation. The details further allege that Ibarra “seriously disfigured her head by striking it multiple times with a rock.” Riley’s body was discovered after she went for a run along the trails near the University of Georgia-Athens campus on February 22.
