Biden Defense Sec Was Hospitalized and Had Surgery Due to Prostate Cancer, White House Not Informed

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin was hospitalized at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center on January 1 due to complications from prostate cancer surgery, which he underwent on December 22.

He experienced symptoms like nausea and severe pain six days after the surgery, leading to his admission to the intensive care unit.

Austin’s absence was not communicated to President Biden until January 4. Despite the complications, a Department of Defense spokesperson assured that Austin is recovering well, in good spirits, and maintains communication with senior staff, overseeing day-to-day operations.

Austin apologized for the delayed public disclosure of his hospitalization. This sparked outrage among Republicans in Congress who accused the Department of Defense of intentionally withholding information, with some suggesting Austin’s impeachment.

Montana GOP congressman Matt Rosendale argued that Austin violated his oath of office and is unfit for the position. In response to the controversy,

White House Chief of Staff Jeff Zients issued a memo directing Cabinet members to immediately notify his office if they are unable to perform their duties due to hospitalization, medical procedures, or other circumstances making them unreachable.

The incident has raised concerns about transparency and accountability within the Department of Defense.
