Aurora, Colorado’s police chief announced Wednesday that the city has helped approximately 85 families and individuals relocate from crime-ridden apartment complexes linked to the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua (TdA) and poor property management.
Aurora Police Chief Todd Chamberlain provided an update on the city’s ongoing efforts, including a criminal nuisance closure order that resulted in the shutdown of the Edge at Lowry. Last month, city Judge Shawn Day ruled that the complex must temporarily close due to an “immediate threat to public safety.”
Chamberlain stated that the complex will remain closed until property management changes or takes accountability. If not, he warned that the city will pursue legal action. He accused management of allowing dangerous conditions to persist by exploiting vulnerable migrant populations for profit while failing to maintain basic safety and oversight.
“The reports confirm the residents faced severe neglect, intimidation, and in some cases, financial extortion by both the management and the criminal element that took over this location,” Chamberlain said, referring to TdA’s presence at the property.
He described serious maintenance issues, including broken stoves, hazardous electrical wiring, and a dysfunctional heating system. In one unit, exposed electrical cords created a fire risk for residents.
Chamberlain also said that a basement room in a nearby building was being used for drug sales, prostitution, and human trafficking. He accused TdA of taking control of sections of the complex, creating a climate of fear.
“The gang specifically targeted its own community, Venezuelan immigrants, through violence, intimidation, extortion, and even kidnapping,” he said. “The complex became a hub for drug trafficking, home invasions, shootings, and violent assaults.”
One of the most severe incidents occurred in December, when individuals were kidnapped, tortured, and extorted inside one of the units. In January, nine suspected gang members were charged in connection with the home invasion, kidnapping, and robbery at the complex.
The city’s actions are part of a broader effort to improve safety and prevent further victimization of residents in high-crime areas.
