Democrats in the Senate are pounding the brakes on President Donald Trump’s Cabinet nominees.
After four days as president, his only confirmed Cabinet member is Secretary of State Marco Rubio, behind his predecessors, Just The News reported.
“Democrats blocked John Ratcliffe’s confirmation vote because they don’t care about qualifications, integrity, or national security,” Senate Republicans said on X . “But they do care about denying President Trump his cabinet, even if it hurts the country.”
Ratcliffe was anticipated to be confirmed on Tuesday, but Senate Democrats used a procedural measure to stop the vote, Just the News reported.
But Republicans have vowed to work through the weekend to get the nominees confirmed, even as FBI director nominee Kash Patel, Director of National Intelligence nominee Tulsi Gabbard, and Health and Human Services Secretary nominee Robert F. Kennedy Jr. have still not had hearings in front of their committees.
“As I’ve repeatedly said, Senate Republicans are ready to work as long as needed to confirm President Trump’s nominees. Nights. Weekends. Recesses,” Senate Majority Leader and South Dakota Sen. John Thune said on X.
“That’s not going to happen,” he said in the Senate of the Democrats’ scheme to block the nominations. “We’re gonna file cloture on him. You can force us to hang around here and we can vote on these things Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, and we’re gonna vote on them.”
“I understand there are some that are gonna draw some opposition from the other side of the aisle,” he said. “Everything we’re doing right now is just stalling and I don’t know what that accomplishes for you.”
My message to obstructionist Democrats: Don’t make plans this weekend. We’re going to get President Trump’s nominees confirmed the easy collegial way, or apparently the hard way,” Senate Select Committee on Intelligence Chairman and Arkansas Republican Sen. Tom Cotton said on X.
“We’re going to wear down the Democrats. Either you’re going to play ball with us, or you’re going to go without sleep,” Oklahoma Senator Markwayne Mullin said on Fox News.
