Mark Halperin, who founded and hosts the online political show ‘2Way,’ appeared on NewsNation’s “On Balance,” where he spoke about the first few days of the Trump administration and President Donald Trump’s policies.
The political commentator said that what the president has done is extremely popular with the voters, even if the establishment is not thrilled with what he has done and is doing.
“I’m telling you guys, as an experienced analyst and watcher of administrations, the symbolism here is powerful. Some of the things they’re doing is changing federal policy, but things like the pardons are symbolic,” Halperin said.
“Trump is not afraid of being criticized by ‘The Washington Post’ editorial board or by a prominent columnist. And you saw in most of our presidents, not all, but in most, a concern about what the establishment thinks of. Trump craves their support, but he’s operating now with, and as you said, with a very long-gestating plan,” the commentator said.
“And all of the things they’re now doing. They all have symbolism. Some are dog whistles. But some shots to the entire nation and most of what he’s doing, despite what some people in the establishment think, most, not all, but most of them are quite popular,” he added.
One of those popular things happened on Thursday when he signed an executive order directing the release of classified documents related to the assassinations of former President John F. Kennedy, Senator Robert F. Kennedy, and civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. This move fulfills a long-standing campaign pledge and aims to address decades of speculation and conspiracy theories surrounding the killings.
“Everything will be revealed,” Trump stated as he signed the order in the Oval Office.
The executive order also includes previously classified documents on the assassinations of Robert F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr., despite no congressional mandate requiring their release. “I have determined that the release of all records in the Federal Government’s possession pertaining to each of those assassinations is also in the public interest,” the order states.
