President Donald Trump’s deportation operations have begun, Border Czar Tom Homan said.
The border czar spoke with CNN anchor Dana Bash on Tuesday and said that the operations had begun on Tuesday, the day after the president’s inauguration.
“ICE is out there enforcing the law today, and of course, as I’ve said numerous times, they’re concentrating on public safety threats. That will be our priority right out of the gate. So ICE officers are back to doing their job,” he told Bash after she asked how the raids were not the same as what former President Joe Biden was doing.
“I wouldn’t call them raids. They’re targeted enforcement operations. They know exactly who they’re looking for. They know pretty much where they’ll find them. So again, these are well-planned operations. They’re well-investigated. They’ve got a lot of backup information when they go out there. The whole team goes out due to officer safety concerns. This happens throughout the nation. I’m not going to tell you specific locations out of officer safety concerns, but ICE is back doing their job effective today. They haven’t been able to do it for years,” Homan responded.
Bash then asked Homan how Immigration and Customs Enforcement was finding the migrants to deport.
“ICE officers across the country have a non-detained docket. They know who these people are. When they don’t show up in court, fail to leave as ordered by an immigration judge, or have NCIC information on someone arrested for a violent crime and who is in the country illegally, they take those leads, do investigative work, and try to find out where these people may be located. That’s the whole investigative piece they do before they go out and actually make an arrest,” he said.
The anchor pressed Homan on whether the deportations would be limited to migrants who have committed serious crimes, but he said that it would depend on whether or not one was found during an operation.
“What I’m telling you is, when we go find our priority target, which is a criminal alien, if he’s with others in the United States illegally, we’re going to take enforcement action against them. We’re going to enforce the immigration law,” he said.
